Background of the Study

Pneumonia is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among children globally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries like Nigeria. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), pneumonia accounts for a significant proportion of childhood deaths, with children under the age of five being most vulnerable (Ojo et al., 2023). Nurses, particularly those working in pediatric units, play a vital role in the early detection, treatment, and management of pediatric pneumonia. They are responsible for monitoring vital signs, administering medications, educating caregivers, and ensuring that children receive appropriate care to manage the condition.

In Kaduna State, the burden of pneumonia in children is exacerbated by factors such as inadequate healthcare facilities, poor nutrition, and limited access to healthcare services in rural areas. Nurses working in pediatric care settings are often the first line of defense against pneumonia, yet their knowledge and effectiveness in treating the condition are rarely assessed. This study will assess the role of nurses in treating pediatric pneumonia in Kaduna State, focusing on their knowledge, skills, and the effectiveness of their interventions in managing the condition.

Statement of the Problem

Pneumonia remains a leading cause of death among children in Kaduna State, despite the availability of effective treatments. Nurses, who play a pivotal role in managing pediatric pneumonia, may face challenges in delivering optimal care due to factors such as inadequate training, lack of resources, and high patient loads. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of nursing interventions in treating pediatric pneumonia, identify barriers to effective care, and recommend strategies for improving nursing practices in the treatment of pneumonia in children.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the knowledge and skills of nurses in treating pediatric pneumonia in Kaduna State.

2. To evaluate the effectiveness of nursing interventions in managing pediatric pneumonia in Kaduna State.

3. To identify challenges faced by nurses in treating pediatric pneumonia and suggest ways to improve care.

Research Questions

1. What is the level of knowledge and skills among nurses in treating pediatric pneumonia in Kaduna State?

2. How effective are nurses in managing pediatric pneumonia in Kaduna State?

3. What barriers do nurses face in treating pediatric pneumonia in Kaduna State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurses in Kaduna State with specialized training in pediatric care are more effective in treating pediatric pneumonia than those without such training.

2. Nurses in Kaduna State face significant barriers, such as limited resources and inadequate training, which hinder their ability to effectively treat pediatric pneumonia.

3. Providing continuous training and improving resources will enhance the effectiveness of nurses in managing pediatric pneumonia in Kaduna State.

Definitions of Terms

• Pediatric Pneumonia: An infection of the lungs that causes inflammation and can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi, particularly affecting children under the age of five.

• Nursing Interventions in Pediatric Care: Actions taken by nurses to diagnose, treat, and manage pediatric conditions, including pneumonia, through monitoring, medication administration, and caregiver education.

• Effectiveness of Nursing Care: The ability of nurses to achieve positive patient outcomes, including recovery from illness, based on their clinical knowledge, skills, and interventions.
